Forest School and Outdoor Learning

At Whitefield Community Primary School, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Some of the most meaningful and memorable experiences happen outdoors, where children can explore, discover, and make sense of the world in a real and engaging context.

We are proud of our school environment and the opportunities it provides. With our spacious grounds (including our forest) and access to the surrounding local area, we are uniquely positioned to offer rich and varied outdoor learning experiences. We make full use of these spaces to enhance our curriculum and bring learning to life.

Outdoor learning is an integral part of what we offer at Whitefield. It supports all areas of the curriculum, from English and Mathematics to science, physical development, and the wider curriculum. Through outdoor experiences, children develop essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience, as well as a sense of curiosity and independence.

Teachers are encouraged to use the outdoor space as part of any aspects of the curriculum, for all and part lessons, for a minimum of once each week.

We know that children learn best when they are actively engaged. Whether it’s exploring nature, working collaboratively on challenges, or taking part in activities beyond the school grounds, outdoor learning helps to deepen understanding and make learning more meaningful.

At Whitefield Community Primary School, we aim to provide opportunities that are enjoyable, creative, and appropriately challenging. By learning through experience, our children grow into confident, responsible individuals who value their community and develop a lifelong respect for the natural environment.

Woodland Trust Award

As part of our Forest School sessions, we have been been taking part in the Woodland Trust activities and have now received our Gold Award. We are so proud of the work that the children have done and can't wait to get started on the PLATINUM Award!
